The Project
CK Contracts Ltd (CKC) were awarded a contract by AMCO Giffen for construction of a new ‘Pebble’ station building and a Train Presentation storage building as part of the new Levenmouth Branch railway.
The works involved both managing and delivering construction works in relation to the two buildings.
The Levenmouth line was a new build construction and was not connected to the Main Line until near the end of the overall project. As such, a majority of the works could be carried out under High Street Working during normal, dayshift hours.
Scope of Works
Leven Pebble Building
The Pebble building comprised both an external Waiting Area for passengers and also Offices, Welfare and a Bothy for Scotrail train crews.
The building was elliptical in shape which brought challenges for the construction of the internal and external walls.
The Waiting Area was external to the main building, but covered by the same roof structure.
The Office and Welfare area for Scotrail comprised several rooms including kitchen, offices, Safe room and locker rooms complete with shower and WC.
Train Presentation and Cleaners Store
The Train Presentation building was for the storage of cleaning and washing equipment for Scotrail staff to clean and prepare the train carriages stabled overnight at Leven Station.
The building was constructed by CK Contracts from foundations right through to the building being handed over to the Client for final entry into service.
The building was constructed of blockwork walls, a timber roof with steel cladding and a steel security door.
Challenges & Solutions
- Challenge: The Pebble building was elliptical in shape which brought challenges for the construction of the internal and external walls. The building also incorporated a roof with curved, profiled cladding to match the shape of the elliptical layout. This required a lot of integration between the Client’s architect and the subcontractor in order to get all the necessary sizes and fixing details. This process was managed by CK Contracts.
- Solution: Working with the architect, CKC and our subcontractor were able to provide accurate as-built dimensions so that the detailing of the panels could be verified prior to manufacture. Once on site, the framing and panels were carefully laid out on site and checked for fit.
- Impact: The roof cladding was on the critical path for overall completion in time for the opening of the station. The works were completed on programme.
Results & Outcome
The CKC Project Manager was in charge of the overall project. He liaised and reported to the Client’s Project Manager on site updating him on progress and reporting any issues.
The scheme was delivered on time, to what was a very constrained programme and ultimately led to a successful station open by the current First Minister, Mr John Swinney MP.
Conclusion & Client Feedback
The programme for the works was dictated by the opening date for the station and new line on 29th May 2024 and all works were complete and handed back to programme dates.
